The low-level version of the of the chess coffee table was designed by the ultimate craftsman in the form of a Mexican coffee table. Included as one of the tables en forme libre created between 1938 and 1939, the final design was developed in 1952 for the students’ rooms of the Maison du Mexique at the Cité Universitaire Internationale in Paris. The chess coffee table has a solid wood top made of walnut pattern. The base is brown and lacquered in high-gloss transparent varnish. The tabletop's thickness and curved edges were created to reflect the size of the human hand. The iconic triangular shape with bevelled edges, originally designed to make the best use of the available space, remains the unmistakable trait in the Mexique Outdoor line, launched now as a low table and dining table.
